Dry ice is a solid form of Carbon Dioxide, or CO2, and is a versatile cooling and freezing agent used in a wide variety of applications. As the dry ice sublimates, it slowly shrinks and becomes less dense. Here are some tips to help you slow own the sublimation process and keep your Dry Ice as fresh as possible.

Safety First

• Never store Dry Ice in an airtight container. Dry ice turns directly into a gas, which expands in volume as it sublimates, and the gas needs to escape.
• Remember to always store Dry Ice in a well-ventilated area to allow the carbon dioxide gas to easily disperse.
• Store the Dry Ice in a proper container with a tight fitting – but not air tight - lid or cover. Coolers or boxes lined with Styrofoam will do. Dry Ice containers are available for purchase from Simcoe Gases.
• Minimize air contact and air flow around the Ice by filling the empty head space in the container with crumpled paper or other packing material.
• Store and transport large amounts of Dry Ice in proper Dry Ice bins, which are available from Simcoe Gases.
• Store the Dry Ice containers in a cool place, Do not store the containers in walk-in coolers and freezers due to the unventilated nature and excessive air currents in these spaces.

Due to the very cold temperature of the product and the expansion properties inherent in sublimating from a solid to a gas, adherence to proper dry ice handling and safety guidelines is a must.
